12th June 2013. 11,262 miles Buenos Aires to New York

11th June. Newark, New Jersey.

We arrived in Newark from our last nights stay near Hershey at 17.00 this evening. The journey in, guided by SatNav and interpreted by River was uneventful, but a little stressful as we were enmeshed in the rush hour traffic.

Distant views of the Manhattan skyline were glimpsed through the industrial approaches of Newark, which were enough to distract me with lifting platform bridges, multiple rail lines and defunct industrial buildings. The mournful wail of passing passenger trains leant a slightly surreal air to proceedings.

Other drivers were kind enough to let us switch lanes as a group and the occasional wave, honk and thumbs-up were welcome in the hurly-burly that is the traffic scene here. We found our rented house on 8th Avenue, a terrace of late 19th century workers houses, which is conveniently close to the docks. The street is quiet, only the nearby high level rail line and its passing trains providing a background metropolis soundtrack.

Early this morning an exchange of emails with our shipping agent in London, finally brought news of a shipping date which will get the cars back to England in time for The 750 Club Austin 7 National Rally at Beaulieu on the 7th July 2013

12th June. Newark, New Jersey.

We have done it, finally made Times Square this morning, today we more than doubled the number of Austin 7’s that have visited Times Square. John Coleman 1960, Vince Leek 2006, Diana Garside and River Duke, Stan Price and Amanda Peters and Jack Peppiatt June 2013.

=We left Newark at 05.30 and entered Times Square at 06.30, the traffic was building but really quite manageable. We parked on the pavement and took our time, taking pictures, talking to one or two interested people and all without any hassle.

We are now back at the house in Newark and trying to come to terms with the enormity of it all. I think we will go and have breakfast and then unwind a little.

  7. A superb achievement.
When you look back in a few months’ time I wonder what you will feel has been the most significant aspect of the adventure – getting three ancient cars across so many countries, making so many new friends perhaps. Or would it be the sheer kindness, humanity and warmth shown by ordinary people to a group of strangers. I think I know.

  8. Congratulations Stan and Co. Followed your travels with great interest and so glad you finally made it to The Big Apple……a job well done!
